Antenatal care is the single most effective way to protect both mother and baby. The World Health Organization recommends at least eight contacts during pregnancy, and our maternity unit structures these around the three trimesters.
First trimester (weeks 1-12)
- Confirmation of pregnancy and dating ultrasound
- Blood group, haemoglobin, HIV, syphilis and hepatitis screening
- Blood pressure and weight baseline
- Folic acid and nutritional counselling
Second trimester (weeks 13-28)
Visits are typically monthly. We monitor fetal growth, screen for gestational diabetes and anaemia, give tetanus immunisation and begin a birth preparedness plan with you.
Third trimester (weeks 29-40)
Visits become fortnightly, then weekly from week 36. We confirm the baby's position, review your delivery package and agree on when to come in.
Come to hospital immediately for reduced fetal movement, bleeding, severe headache, blurred vision or fluid leakage — at any hour.
